A Day at Hotel Ramada – Annual Academic Sessions of SLAUS
Annual academic sessions of SLAUS (Sri Lanka Association of Urological Surgeons) in collaboration with BUAS (British Association of Urological Surgeons) were held from 3rd to 5th of November of 2014 in Colombo. Pre congress workshops and the inauguration of sessions were held on 3rd and 4th of November respectively. Last day was allocated for the scientific sessions.
Three students from each medical faculty of Sri Lanka were invited to participate in the last day of sessions with free of registration. Representing Jaffna medical faculty we, Silmiya Yoosuf, Inthuja Thavakularatnam, Vinitharan Varunanantharajah as 4th year students from 33rd batch had participated. The experience we had was valuable and unforgettable.
On 5th November the programme was started with trainees’ forum and then continued with symposiums and plenary lectures, in between them we had lunch and tea breaks. We were very glad to see our senior student of our faculty and registrar surgery was presenting his abstract in the trainees’ forum. The symposiums and plenary lectures covered various aspects of urology such as stress urinary incontinence, prostate cancer, renal mass, male infertility, female urology, male incontinence and telemedicine. New assessment, management and treatment modalities of each condition were talked in detail and in a simple way by the urological surgeons of our country as well as the overseas surgeons. It was really very interesting to get know the new things as medical students from the specialists; they are the good teachers for us than the books. There we had the opportunity to clear the doubts at the end of each talk; really it’s a good opportunity for students to improve the knowledge. Not only had gained the medical knowledge from them but also had the chance to develop our soft skills on the way of presentations, talking in a forum, organizing a forum, etc.
During the lunch time and tea times we had a chat with other students from various medical faculties, the doctors and our seniors from our faculty. So it is a great time to make new friends and for the seniors to remembering their experiences as students.
When considering the special thing of SLAUS sessions, research scholarship was given for the best abstract presenter in trainees’ forum. It is an encouraging stimulus for the younger doctors especially on urology. As well as at the end of the sessions the current opportunities for postgraduate training from overseas countries in UK and also the pathways in the procurement of training fellowships were discussed. It was a good start for the younger doctors to step ahead in urology in future.
At the end of sessions we were given certificates for our participation in the sessions. Finally we left the place with lots of experiences and with future plans in our carrier.
